Community Listening Process Info Session

On Sunday, August 6th at 9:30 a.m., Pastor Karissa will be leading an information session about the Community Listening Process that she is guiding our church through currently. She will describe why we are doing this process, the history of how it got started, the timeline of the process, the ultimate goal of the process, the composition of the listening team, the work that the listening team is doing now, the people and organizations that the listening team has interviewed thus far, the questions that we are asking people, and what will happen after the listening process has been completed. She will also answer any questions you have about the process!

Downtown Block Party

On Saturday, August 19th from 5:00-7:00 p.m., we are hosting a Downtown Block Party at Evergy Plaza in order to build connections with and amongst our neighbors! This is a National Night Out event, which means that it is part of a country-wide movement to promote law enforcement-community relationships and neighborhood camaraderie so that our neighborhoods are safer, more caring places to live.

At the event, we will serve a free dinner, and there will be a variety of fun activities, including a bilingual story time, a cake walk, the splash pad, bubbles, corn hole, painting rocks, get-to-know-you bingo with prizes, mini tours of a fire truck, and a prayer tent. There is something for all ages!

You won't want to miss being a part of this exciting event, so if you have not already filled out a sheet about how you want to help, please click this link and do that now. There are things you can do before, during, and after the event, so everyone should be able to pitch in! If you would like to donate to help us pay for event expenses, you can do so by clicking the following link and selecting "Downtown Block Party" from the dropdown menu. Please let Pastor Karissa know if you have any questions!

Why Ring??

Ringing in a Handbell Group is a wonderful way to praise God, and a great way to share the many blessings God has given us! Join us as a Handbell Ringer and be a part of the music ministry at Topeka First! We have two groups at Topeka First, a Beginner Group and a Advanced Group. If you haven't read music for years, or never got the hang of it, the Beginner Group is for you. If you can read music, and feel comfortable reading, the Advanced Group is your place. Bell ringing and methods will be taught to all!

Email Handbell Director, DeAnna Guzman at info@forthegoodofthecity.org, or call the church office for more information.

Mobile Access Partnership (MAP) Volunteers Needed

We will be hosting the Mobile Access Partnershipimage (MAP) in our parking lot on August 8th and 10th from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. If you would like to volunteer in the parking lot, providing services for our neighbors without homes, please email the Volunteer Coordinator, Suzie Paslay, at spaslay@trmonline.org. These volunteer shifts are 3 hours and 45 minutes (8:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. and 12:00 - 3:45 p.m.) If you would like to volunteer as a bathroom monitor in our building, providing hospitality to our neighbors without homes, please email Pastor Karissa at karissa@forthegoodofthecity.org. These volunteer shifts are one hour long.

Disciple of the Month

Carol Sprague is the August disciple of the month

image Carol Sprague has long been a fixture in the life of Topeka First United Methodist Church, and has also shared her many gifts and talents throughout the community! Carol started attending First Church at the age of three, attending weekly with her mother, father and four brothers. First Church has been greatly blessed to have had Carol in our congregation and community since then! Carol has served on the Day Care Board, Caring Committee, Finance Committee, and Connections Committee; and has been a Sunday School teacher and an organizer and teacher for Vacation Bible School. Many, many children who have grown up at First Church have experienced her character- building approach, her engaging Bible teaching, and her loving and fun spirit! Carol currently participates in United Women in Faith, New Decade Sunday School, Phase Two Group, the Quilting Group, and the Yoga Group. In the wider community, Carol has volunteered at the Hospital Gift Shop for 33 years, has volunteered with Race Against Breast Cancer for the last 25 years, and has long volunteered at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, for Special Olympics, for Parks & Recreation events, for Treasures of the Czars Museum, for Doorstep, and for the Topeka Rescue Mission. Carol is married to Chuck Wilson, who has also become a member of First Church. Carol retired from the State of Kansas after 38 years, and then retired from Washburn University after 4 years. Her hobbies are sewing, crafting, and painting, and she loves attending her grandchildren's sporting events and activities.

THANK YOU, CAROL! What a true disciple you are, and we at First Church are very grateful for YOU!
