Topeka First News, March 7, 2025Topeka First UMC: Your Bridge to God, One Another, and the Community Greetings Topeka First UMC,
I hope that you are having a great week!
Welcome to the season of Lent! Last night at the Ash Wednesday service we 1)wrote down and burned the things that keep us from God and 2) wrote out on strips of paper the ways in which we are going to grow in our relationship with God through this season. This is really what our lenten sermon series is all about.
In worship over the next 5 weeks, we will look at what we can "Give Up to Create Space." This Sunday, we begin by giving up Unrealistic Expectations. Sometimes we put expectations upon ourselves, friends and community that are unrealistic. In doing so, we keep ourselves and those around us from fully living into who God created us to be. On this first Sunday of Lent, we will look at unrealistic expectations, discover how they hold us back, and look at how to set healthy expectations that create space for flourishing. We will also welcome new members during both the 9:30 am & 10:45 am services.
Coming up on Sunday March 23, we are celebrating 170 years as a church. As part of the celebration we will host Heritage Sunday, receive new members, and lots more. Please mark your calenders and plan to join us for this celebration.
See you Sunday, Pastor Brad

Topeka Festival Singers Monday, March 10 ConcertCelebrate the Majesty Concert Several of our Topeka First UMC choir members (along with 50 other area choir members) are part of The Topeka Festival Singers who are presenting a concert on Monday, March 10 at 7:30 pm at White Concrt Hall on the Washburn University Campus that you might be interested in! They are celebrating Christian church music through the centuries from Palestrina (1500's) all the way through gospel music. Every song celebrates God and/or Jesus. While it's not a "church service," it will be very inspiring especially to believers--on the order of the Brahms Requiem, yet different, and including a wide variety of music. To enhance the experience, there will also be a slide presentation of beautiful stained glass windows in churches--from local to world-wide--before the concert and during intermission.
