One Combined Service October 22nd There will be one combined service on October 22nd, in the Sanctuary. We will be celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the Sanctuary and Heritage Sunday. Hope to see everyone here for these exciting events. Spoiler Alert: We will be recognizing 2 - 80+ year members that day. Jump House Meetings Topeka JUMP, the justice coalition of 30 faith communities in Topeka that we are a part of, is hosting 2 house meetings in the month of October to kick off their annual process. You can come to either meeting (they will be identical). One will be on Sunday, October 8th from 12:00-1:30 p.m. in Room 101, and a light lunch will be provided. The other will be on Monday, October 16th from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in the Bishop Frank Room (Room 105), and dinner will be provided. At the meeting, we will discuss Topeka JUMP and how its annual process works and what it means to be a network member. We will also talk about the justice concerns in our community that concern us the most so that we can contribute to Topeka JUMP's listening process as they prepare to pick a new focus issue for this year. If you have any questions, please reach out to Pastor Karissa at karissa@forthegoodofthecity.org. Pastor Brad's Fall One Night Bible Studies This fall Pastor Brad will be leading a one-night Bible study & discussion of one of the most divisive issues facing churches today: homosexuality, marriage and ordination of LGBTQ+ persons. He’ll lead a Bible study that will include studying the texts in the Bible that speak to homosexuality and have discussions about them. The purpose of this study is to read, discuss, and allow space for story around this topic. Please sign up for one Bible study & discussions:
"Sew It's Tuesday" Quilt Raffle The "Sew It's Tuesday" quilting group made this whimsical holiday quilt that will be raffled off and the money raised put towards a new stove in the church kitchen. Tickets will be 1 for $2.00 or 3 for $5.00 and will be sold through Sunday the Oct. 22nd, with the winner announced on Sunday Oct. 29th. The fabric was donated, Janet Corwin designed and pieced it, Becky Downs machine quilted it, and Lauraine Fenoglio bound it. You can see the quilt in the celebration room and buy your tickets through Sunday the 22nd. In addition, the quilters group would like to make it known that individuals don't have to quilt here at church! Individuals are encouraged to make quilt tops together and then the group will quilt and bind it for them! The group is excited to teach people how to quilt and would love to have more folks sew! Mobile Access Partnership (MAP) Changes for the Winter During the spring, summer, and fall, we host the Mobile Access Partnership (MAP) in our parking lot two days a month. This is the ministry that provides services/resources like showers, clothing, food, and medical care for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. During the winter months, however, the trailers that are used to provide these services must be winterized, and MAP moves to sites that have indoor showers. Thus, volunteer needs change from November until the early spring. There is not a need for bathroom monitors at our church during these months, but other tasks (like serving food, cleaning showers, etc.) at the indoor site(s) need to be covered every Tuesday and Thursday. If you would like to volunteer in one of these roles periodically, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Suzie Paslay, at spaslay@trmonline.org. Little Library Wants to Grow Our Little Free Library located near the Celebration Room entrance is in need of gently used children, youth and adult books. As you are doing your Fall cleaning and come across once loved books, please consider bringing them to the front desk and Tiwana will see they get a home in the Little Free Library. The library is used both by community neighbors and our church family. Pizza with the Pastor Sunday, October 8th If you are guest and would like to learn more about Topeka First you are invited to Pizza with the Pastor. We will enjoy lunch as Pastor Brad shares about baptism and membership in the church as well as how to get connected and take the next step in your spiritual journey. We will meet in the Bishop Frank Forum, Room 105 at 11:45, right after the worship service. Please respond to the church at 785-233-8100 or to Tiwana by Friday October 6th if you can attend. This is a time of connection and doesn’t commit you to membership. Trunk-or-Treat! On Sunday, October 29th from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Cathedral (701 SW 8th Ave), we will be joining with other downtown churches to put on an awesome Trunk-or-Treat event for our community! The last couple years, tons of families have flocked to participate in this event, and last year, there were so many people that we even ran out of candy! So... we need your help to make this the best Trunk-or-Treat yet, with enough candy and fun for everyone! You can donate candy by bringing a bag (or more) to the front desk and/or you can sign up to bring your trunk and pass out candy at the event (bonus points for decorating your trunk and dressing up in a costume). Please email Pastor Karissa at karissa@forthegoodofthecity.org if you are planning to bring your trunk and pass out candy! Our goal is to have at least 10 trunks from our church. |
